(faire) cabane is an artistic and choreographic in-situ production for a choir of people and materials, that takes form from scores for creating moving “cabanes” (which can mean a makeshift shelter, shack or hut, as well as children’s dens or tree houses). The living “cabanes” move and reconfigure in a series of evolving apparitions, in which the materials become one and individuals communicate through gesture, reflecting or contrasting with their surroundings. Driven by playfulness, the “cabanes” are imbued with a roaming spirit, stalked by lethargy, and constantly threatened by conflict and dissolution. In their brief lifespans, the “cabanes” strive fervently to embody the unexpected and unlikely vitality of building together and the fragile potential in shared intimacy. Ephemeral, quirky dwellings, the “cabanes” evoke multiple imaginary worlds. It is the “cabane”’s symbolic dimension, rather than its functional qualities, that fascinates, because “cabanes” create new experiences of a space and alternative perceptions of togetherness.
(faire) cabane is reinvented to respond to the particular features of each site and is principally designed for parks, gardens, and natural spaces.
The designer Mathias Poisson invents and makes the elements for the cabanes. They are designed specifically to dialogue with the spaces where they will evolve.
Creative process
(faire) cabane is for amateurs of any age.
The preparation phase for (faire) cabane consists of outdoor on-site workshops. The workshops begin with an ordinary warm-up and awareness session in which exercises and games enable each person to develop and refine their relationship to movement, their capacity to locate themselves in space, to listen, to perceive the environment, and to read the landscape. Through guided explorations, manipulations, and choreographed games, the participants are then invited to work with the elements created by Mathias Poisson to make a cabane.
A score (a sequence of actions) defines the scenario that lets each cabane emerge, and then guides its movements and configurations. The score is repeated on site, and then performed in public on specific days.
During the repetitions or rehearsals, Mathias Poisson creates a graphic score for (faire) cabane which acts as a game guide for the participants and documents the production.
(faire) cabane was produced by the association … & alters (production supervised by Marie Roche), co-produced by the Festival Entre cours et jardin, and received support from the association Sentiers.
