At the heart of Anne Collod’s new work Moving Alternatives is the faithful reprise of solo and group pieces by choreographers Ruth Saint-Denis and her collaborator and partner Ted Shawn, key precursors of American modern dance. Through contemporary prisms of gender, postcolonialism and cultural appropriation, this piece will examine multiple aspects of otherness embedded in the lush, Indian-inspired and Asian-inspired oeuvre of these icons from a century ago. With a culturally and artistically diverse cast of six international performers, Moving alternatives will queer and reframe these dances through movement and talk, to explore the aesthetic impacts and political stakes of reinterpreting these works in this era. The piece will articulate the recreation and the reinterprétation of 3 solo pieces of Ruth Saint- Denis, Incense (1906), Kashmiri Nautch (1919) and Lazy Nautch (1917) and excerpts of group pieces of Ted Shawn, Kinetic Molpai (1935) and The Dome 6e Prélude (1933), with different proposals lead by the 6 performers.
